2013 Vestry Stewardship Invitation
The Vestry of St. Michael and All Angels wish to thank our parish family for their generosity. Just as Jesus fed the multitudes with a small quantity, God will multiply our gifts so there is more than enough for all. Prayerfully consider your commitment towards a tithe. It will make a difference in the spiritual and physical nurturing of God's people.
Don't have 14 minutes? This version is only about 6 minutes.
Oh! It’s “that” time of year again, huh? School starts again, football season gets underway, sweaters start to come out of the closet, and we get our annual letter from the Stewardship Committee asking us to prayerfully consider our gift to St. Michael’s again this year. If you’re like us, this letter goes in a pile somewhere on the counter in the kitchen or on your desk and doesn’t get much attention until two or three days before the pledge cards are due. We understand. In fact, most of the attention around stewardship at our houses happens in a three-minute conversation with our spouses and, because it’s the easiest way, we sort of do what we did last year . . . Except this time of year isn’t really about a letter from the Stewardship Committee, it’s really a tap on the shoulder from God asking “Are you awake? Do you know what time it is? Am I at work in your life?”
St. Michael and All Angels exists today because of the incredible generosity of all who came before us and all who currently support and contribute to our parish. This year our committee has spent significant time and energy on reconfiguring our parish budget so we can see just how our commitments of time and resources affect people, not only in our community, but around the world.
Take a look at the Mission Plan spreadsheet on the back of this letter. It’s a great way to take a visual tour of just how much difference you’ve made in the lives of others. Hundreds of kids in Haiti, hundreds of hungry people at St. Paul’s, and dozens of children in desperate need of a helping hand at Rushton and Crestview Schools—all are leading different lives because of St. Michael’s and our programs. Every day of every week our Pastoral Care team calls on people in need, our music touches us, our youth programs provide important outlets, and our education programs reach out to people. New outreach programs are taking shape as well. That said, our staff and clergy are wrestling with budget cuts and shortfalls that we as a parish need to address.
For calendar year 2012, the annual budget was $1,244,139. Pledged income makes up 87% of our annual budget. As our Mission Plan illustrates, our 2013 budget totals $1,310,491. This increase of $66,352 accomplishes multiple tasks, including expanding our youth programs, updating our wireless network throughout the church building, improving the lunch program in Haiti, enhancing our music programs, and last, giving our clergy and staff a long overdue cost of living increase.
This time of year is really just about answering questions. Are you awake? Do you know what time it is? Do you know how precious and powerful your resources are? Please consider an increase of $25 or $50 per month over your pledge last year. Shop a little less, hit the ball a little straighter, drink a little less Starbuck’s, or stay home for dinner one more night a month, and have that short conversation. Let’s make our answers be “I am awake and I do know what time it is! I am invested!
Please return your pledge card as soon as possible or bring it to the in-gathering on Sunday, October 28.
You do make the difference. You are needed. Thanks be to God.
