Marriage & Weddings

Weddings

Finding someone we love who loves us in return is a gift from God. At a wedding we give thanks to God for the gift of this primary relationship and pray that the couple will be strengthened to be for each other instruments of God’s love and care throughout the “changes and chances of life.”

St. Michael’s is a beautiful place to get married. The first thing we want to say is congratulations for finding love and having the will to commit your lives to one another, no matter the changes and chances of life. A wedding is an important worship service in the life of a couple’s commitment to one another and to God.

Weddings are for members only of our parish and are scheduled through the priests of the parish. If you would like to secure a date for your wedding on the church calendar the first thing you need to do is make an appointment with a priest. At that appointment the priest will go over our wedding policies, secure a date in the parish calendar, and begin discussing other requirements for Christian Marriage.

A word of advice for all couples: secure the date of your wedding on the church calendar before you secure the date or pay deposits on a reception site. More than once couples have been disappointed to find a date unavailable on the church calendar.

Marriage Preparation

St. Michael's offers the Marriage Journey weekend workshop/retreat once per year. It is designed for engaged couples planning to be married at St. Michael’s in the coming year. The weekend includes fellowship time, sharing meals, short presentations by the mentors and clergy, time alone for the engaged couples to discuss important issues and work through communication exercises, and small group discussions. As well as a practical guide to marriage preparation, the weekend is a time for spiritual reflection.

The content and format encourage the couples to consider God’s involvement in their relationship and to seek the wisdom of Scripture and community support as they enter into this sacred journey. If you would like to share in the joy of encouraging and preparing engaged couples, or if you would like to participate in the Marriage Journey, please contact the church office, 913-236-8600.

Marriage Enrichment

St. Michael’s is a place where relationships are strengthened to make it over the long haul of marriage through times of joy and times of trial. We periodically offer a Marriage Enrichment course with topics such as the art of communication, resolving conflict, the power of forgiveness, good sex, and love in action. In addition we offer pastoral counseling for all couples at any stage in their relationship. Contact the church office with questions, 913-236-8600.

Special day, special place:

Why choose to be married in the church?
We want to make your wedding personal and memorable for you. Churches are special places and there are some things about a church wedding that you just can’t get anywhere else.

  • A church wedding will add a spiritual dimension to your marriage. The ceremony includes God and looks to God for help and guidance. God’s blessing is the main attraction for many couples, whatever their beliefs.
  • You can make amazing vows, or promises, in a church. You can only make vows this big in a church. These vows, made in public, will help you to stay together and grow together. God and your church are there for you to help you keep your vows.
  • The clergy have a very particular role to play in your wedding. They can blend ancient tradition and modern experience to reflect your story. Because of the relationship with the clergy, your wedding can be made personal, memorable, meaningful and beautiful.
  • Church buildings offer outstanding beauty and centuries of history. Imagine all the couples who have married in your local church, some of whom may well be your family. You can feel you’re becoming part of history itself, the bigger plan, by marrying in the same place as your relatives. We know these sorts of connections can make your day even more special.
